Settling into winter on White Crow Farm is about putting the farm into a state of comfortable dormancy. A time to care for the foundation animals while butchering those who’s destiny is to feed the people. This time of year the predators come in closer and the dogs are working all night to keep the herds and flocks safe. These are cold days and long nights in which friends, family, good food, music and art provide such solace.
The gardens have all been harvested, mulched and are now asleep. The horses and cattle have returned from the range and are now eating summer grass stored in the form of hay. Each bale fed out on these cold mornings brings a memory of us sweating back in the hottest days of summer tossing these bails onto the truck to bring them home. For the sheep, goats and pigs who have a shorter gestation than horses and cattle this is time to breed as well so they can join the ranks of pregnant mothers who are all incubating the babies of spring 2012!
