DJ Cure is really that dude. The head honcho of Aufect Recordings and Aufect Digital has been busy in the lab for the past bit cooking up some marvelous shit to get ya mouth waterin’ for reals, he has some serious releases dropping this year in the way of Bombaman/XI and Taal Mala and has graciously found us some time to whip up this tasty little mini-mix with a bunch of tunes he’s had in rotation lately. Peep the Q&A + t/l after the jump.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XCYWCHIBQ: how did you first find music and what got you into it?
A: I was lucky enough to be brought up in a music loving family. I really connected to hip hop when I was a kid. Any movie soundtrack that came out that had a rap song on it, I had to have. As I got older I started skateboarding, which led me to discover underground shit. I was either skateboarding or listening to hip hop, or writing graffiti or drawing.
Q: how/when did you first start creating music?
A: I first started experimenting with writing tracks when I was 15 or 16. We would all get faded have free style sessions while mixing records, and it turned into us writing and producing tracks. We thought they were amazing, but Im sure it was mostly garbage. I didn’t have a computer then, so I was always trying to get studio time anywhere possible. In my first year of college, I applied for a grant and spent the money on the best D.A.W. I could get. I haven’t really stopped making beats since.
Q: where is your favorite spot in the whole world?
A: I’m not sure yet.
Q: favorite animal?
A: Cats for sure. I have two cats that I’m a little obsessed with. I’m sure one of them would eat me if she could.
Q: best year(s) for music?
A: Early to mid 90′s hands down. Shit was just really raw back then. All the best hip hop came out then. Jungle was super-experimental and still had soul. Really amazing detroit techno around then as well. Shits getting pretty interesting right now though, I must say. I think with so much ease of access to literally everything and everything (apps, softsynth wise), people are being forced to step up their game so they don’t get schooled by some 12 year old Russian kid.
Q: ever been in a fight?
A: Yep. Sometimes you have to put people in check. I prefer to stay peaceful these days though.
Q: favorite time of year?
A: I enjoy the summer as much as the next person, but there is something about autumn that really does it for me. Maybe its cus its harvest season.
Q: what does the word DUBSTEP mean to you?
A: 2006
Q: how long have you been attending events/raves?
A: 15 years or so… I was sneaking into shows any ways possible when I was a yout. I used to show up to shows with a video camera and set it up on stage, and stay put. Sometimes the promoters would have to hide a group of us in the coat check or closet. We would have to wait until the show filled up until we could be “freed”.
Q: favorite producers at the moment?
A: Mosca, Jam City, Bok Bok, Bombaman, XI, ULAE, Julio Bashmore, Distal,
HXDB, Egyptrixx, Terror Danjah, Girl Unit, Addison Groove, Dark Sky.
Q: astrological sign?
A: Cancereon
Q: have you ever been to legendary local restaurant Bons Off Broadway?
A: Hangover central. Yeah plenty of times. Haven’t been in a while though, I kinda grew an expensive taste to eggs benny.
Q: favorite venue in vancouver (old or current)
A: I pretty much favor the warehouse vibes. Open Studios, W2, Secret Location, Redgate are all legendary..
Q: one experience that changed your life?
A: When I was 17, I took a whole bunch of LSD. After watching my brain come out of my head (and enjoying it), and trying to convince my friend to drill a hole in her head, I then decided to come out of my body. I floated up the vortex of light that runs through my third eye, and on to the next level. There were these light beings that told me I could hang out where I was, but shouldn’t go up any further into the white light. The next 16 hours really shaped my perspective on this world.
Q: do you play instruments? if so, what?
A: When I was a kid I learned how to play the violin, clarinet and a bit of guitar. I play the computer now.
Q: its raining out. do you have take an umbrella?
A: Depends what’s in my backpack.
Q: favorite cereal?
A: I’m a huge breakfast fan! We normally keep alot of cereal kicking around. Right now I have Lucky Charms (regular & chocolate), Nesquick, Vector, Honey Combs & Mini Wheats lol… in the words of Merklin: “Cereal, bacon, toast and coffee, after consumption nobody can stop me…”
